Tutorial and Step by Step of Marshall Lee

Description

Hiya! Decided to "record" a step by step process and a sort-of tutorial of [link]!

I'm not saying my way is perfect but I'm just doing my best to share what I know ('cause I can't sleep and I do have the time :p ).

I use Paint Tool SAI.

I use custom brushes. You can download some online. Just search 'em on Google.

I use a Round Brush and a Water brush (or Blur) for everything except the background.

Dilution: 0
Blending: 0
Persistence: 50~55

Panel 1

Sketch. I use it as my lineart so I try to keep it clean.

Panel 2

I put new layers underneath the sketch and start to put my base colors, one layer for each part of of the drawing (ex. skin base layer, clothes base layer and hair base layer), making sure the layer arrangement is practical so I can easily add shadow details.

Using the sketch as my guide, I outline each parts as cleanly and precise as possible.

Next, I check Preserve Opacity (on top of the layers section) on each layer (except the hair base layer) so anything I add onto the them stays inside the colored area only. It saves you so much more time than having to clean up after any additional coloring that goes out of your desired outline.

Panel 3

A little suggestion: Don't be afraid to experiment with colors. Trial and error may seem like a waste of time, but as they say, you don't become successful if you've never once failed.

I start with the skin, using a slightly darker shade of my base color to start with my shading base. Using my Water brush (Blur), I smudge areas I deem necessary to add volume and depth.

I add darker colors as I go, blending them using my Water brush to make sure they fit my desired lighting well.

Panel 4

I add more details to the skin shadowing, redo some parts and smudge some areas.

I change the look of the nose because it doesn't look right, so I go back to my base color, recolor the nose area until it is gone, and pick a darker color to start drawing the nose again. (I experimented on this one, googled some nose pictures and drew them until I was satisfied with the nose I had created.)

With shades of grayish purple, I add color to the eye sockets to create eyeballs. I add an even darker shade underneath the lashes to create a shadow.

I make a new layer underneath my hair base layer (I added the eyelashes and eyebrows there as well) so the eyes are underneath the lashes. I color them the same way I colored the skin.

I zoom in closer to the mouth and, using a grayish color, start to draw sharp teeth, because Marshall Lee is a sexy vampire.

On my hair base layer, I add more details to the hair with smaller brush sizes to prepare it for coloring.

Panel 5

Using a darker shade of the base color, I start with the bangs and try to connect the shading with the outline of the hair. I add in hair-like details like thin strips of lines connecting here and there, flicking only when the shadowing reaches the end of the strands, all the while still making sure the shading makes sense.

Next, I choose a darker shade and just color inside the shadow base that I had already created, emphasizing the depths of each strands of hair. Then I use the Water brush to blend them in.

I shade the eyebrows and eyelashes, but only slightly because they aren't much of import to me.

Here comes the fun part: creating random strands of fly-away hair. I lower my brush size to a small dot, and using a color that is a shade lighter than the hair color base, I create random strands here in there, following the shape of the hair outline so they don't look so out of place. I do the same with a grayish white color, but also use it to add some highlights.

I go back to the skin layer, and add more shadows that correspond to the hair so it doesn't look out of place.

Panel 6

I redo the outline of the clothes, and color it the same way I did with the skin and hair. The Water brush is very important here because of the wrinkles of the clothing.

I go back to the skin layer and add shadows that correspond to the clothes.

Panel 7

I add plaid details by creating and stacking new layers on top of one another and lowering their Opacity to help with the plaid effect. I make sure all these new layers are on top of my clothing layer, and then enable Clipping Group (on top of the layers section) so that it is connected to the layer below it (aka the clothing layer). Its effect is the same as Preserve Opacity, except you can now color in a new layer.

I use a black color, making vertical lines and following the wrinkles that I made to make a realistic clothing effect. In a new layer, I do the same, except with horizontal lines this time. Notice how the connected areas of the lines stack up on one another to create a darker shade. Kinda looks like plaid now, doesn't it? I add a finishing touch on a new layer with thin strands of lines to add more to the plaid-ish look.

Panel 8

I create a new layer and put it to Luminosity mode. Alternating between yellow, orange and red, I color on top of the "burnt off" collar to make it appear singed and as if it is still on fire. I add a small trail of this fire to where I believe the wind is blowing and smudge them with the water brush to make it appear like they are moving.

On another layer put into Luminosity mode, I add highlights on the skin and hair where the lights from the burning collar can reach so it doesn't look out of place.

Panel 9

For the background, I used a Thick Bristle custom effect on my Round Brush so it adds a "paintbrush" look as I gradient the colors together.

:star: END :star:

Whelp, I hope that helped you guys. Sorry if TL;DR! I did do my best. :p

Don't be afraid to ask questions as well. I'll try to answer them as well as I can.
